Design Process Reflection- Kitchen
During the first couple of weeks working on the Tiny House project, Kitchen group was in charge of cabinets, countertop and sink. The first few weeks consisted of research, communication and teamwork. Our group began with researching different type of materials for the countertop, cabinets and sink. Besides doing research, kitchen group had to communicate with other groups such as built ins, interior wall insulation and appliances. We had to make sure that all measurements for kitchens appliances would fit to the kitchen space. After the kitchen design was organized and planned out the we focused on the countertop.
We all started of with several options for the countertop material. One of our first option was to have a bamboo countertop. (At first we wanted everything to be made out of bamboo.) We also had ice stone, granite, recycled glass, paper composite, granite and plastic laminate. Having seven options to pick from was not easy. Our team had different ideas as to what the countertop should be. Since the start I the recycled glass countertop because it is durable and low maintenance. This material is hard to stain and easy to clean. It is 100% made of recycle glass, as the name indicates, and lastly it gives the kitchen a modern and beautiful look. Plastic laminate was also one of our top options. Plastic laminate is very popular in the United States, it’s very durable as well as stain and grease resistant. After long debates, recycled glass was picked over all the seven options because it is 100% renewable source making it an eco friendly material. Also, less raw materials are used to produce it. To finalize our work with the countertop we had to get one donated before building the cabinets.
I would say that working on the cabinets was the hardest part of this project. The process to figure how much wood material was needed for the cabinets was difficult. Drawing the measurements to scale was very challenging . At this point I was clueless because I didn't know how to draw to scale. Luckily,I got help from David and my group to finish the drawings. After this we sketched all the measurements of the cabinets, front view, top view and side view. We moved the stove to the right side of the countertop, the sink was under the center line of the window and we ended with four cabinets instead of three.
